Snappers are Streaking Early

The West Boca Snappers kicked off their 2019 season this past Friday with a 5-2 9th inning comeback win against the Boynton Beach Buccaneers. The Gang continued to bring the heat over the weekend, where they won both games in Saturday’s double-header. The Snappers beat the Florida Pokers 7-6 in extra innings and then shut out the Phipps Park Barracudas 10-0 to finish up the day.

Throughout the week the ballclub brought home another 3 wins, beating the Palm Beach Xtreme on Monday.  Collectively giving up just 1 run while racking up 11 K’s with a final score of 7-1. They followed this up by taking both games in Wednesday’s double header against the Boca Raton Blazers, where Robert Schmuck from Reinhardt University, Nick Ortega from Butler University and Brandon Dorsey from Florida Gulf Coast University all went yard for the first time this season.

Florida International University 2B Derek Cartaya (.375, 6 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI), Adelphi University 1B Kyle Olson (.444, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI), and Christian Brothers University 2B Garett Reason-Kerkhoff (.364, 3R, 2 2B, 5 RBI) have all had hot starts offensively.  All are ranked among the league’s top hitters thus far in the season.

The Snappers have also had a dominant pitching staff.  Led by RHP Corey Martinez who is ranked among the league’s top pitchers with 5.0 IP, 5K, and a 0.00 ERA after his first outing.  LHP Gavin Gillespie isn’t far behind, with 7.0IP, 9K, and a 1.29 ERA and 1 win after his first two outings. Another big arm for the Snappers to keep an eye on is LHP Gus Carter from Florida Gulf Coast University. In his first outing he blanked the Barracudas for 4 innings with 7 K's to pick up his first win of the season. The team currently leads the league in both collective ERA (2.57) and fielding PCT (.995).

The reigning SFCBL Champions are certainly proving to be a force to be reckoned with early this summer as they’re the only undefeated team left at 6-0.  Seemingly set to make another deep run into July with a stacked bullpen, crisp defense and bats that have only just begun to heat up!
